Singaporean Mandy Mok has a UK university education in graphic design and a Masters degree in strategic marketing from a major Australian university. She ran her own successful advertising and marketing company in Singapore before joining Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd in 2002 to lead its growth in Asia.

The impact of the QS University Rankings – global, regional and subject specific — on Asian, Middle East and African (AMEA) universities has been considerable. Mandy’s visits to over 200 universities in the AMEA regions have given her a powerful insight into the prevailing realities and future requirements of their higher education provision. Having established trusted relationships at top university management level,Mandy plays a major role in supporting their strategies for improvement, globalization and internationalization.

QS Asia has its own portfolio of regionally focused products and services. A born innovator, often working against the odds, Mandy inspired the launch of, among other highly successful projects, QS Asia Pacific Professional Leaders in Education Conference (QS-APPLE), QS Middle East and Africa Professional Leaders in Education Conference (QS-MAPLE), QS Worldwide Conference, QS WorldClass Seminar, QS in conversation seminar, and the prestigious book, QS Showcase.

Presentation Abstract: External Strategies for Marketing & Branding for Kazakh Universities

This presentation aims to help higher education institutions discover how to adopt and/or adapt the marketing strategies developed by the corporate world. It introduces the 5 P’s of marketing and defines them in the higher education context. The presentation then specifies the four elements of marketing, branding, positioning, and strategy, which are crucial to the long-term success of universities, and reports case studies for each element.

At the final stage, it is explained how QS has created blue oceans through unique and differentiating products, and the presentation concludes with QS’s external strategies (events and seminars), how they are relevant to specific higher education communities, and which strategies meet the marketing strategy needs of universities—for immediate or long-term success.

Prof Yi-Ming Arthur Chen
Vice President
Kaohsiung Medical University


Professor Yi-Ming Arthur Chen currently serves as the vice president of Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU). He also serves as acting Dean of College of Health Science. Professor Chen received M.D. and M.S. from National Yang-Ming University (NYMU).

Besides, he obtained Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) under the mentorship of Professor Max Essex at Harvard School of Public Health. He went to National Cancer Institute, Maryland for his post-doctoral training in the Dr. Takes Papas’ Lab of Molecular Oncology. In 1992, Dr. Chen came back to Taiwan and got a joined appointment from Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica and Department of Public Health of NYMU. Since then, he has served different administrative positions for NYMU before he moved to KMU and set up Cancer for Infectious Disease and Cancer Research in 2013.

Dr. Chen devotes himself in the global health, especially in the prevention and drug development for HIV/AIDS and cancer.


Presentation Abstract: Higher Education Program in Taiwan

In Taiwan, students can pursue higher learning at colleges and universities. Like in many other countries, university undergraduate programs require four years of study; internships from six months to two years are sometimes required. Graduate programs leading to a Master’s degree require one to four years; those for a doctorate, two to seven years. Currently, there are 163 universities and colleges in Taiwan.

Currently more than 80 percent of the faculties at Taiwan’s universities hold doctoral degrees. To upgrade the quality of higher education, the Ministry of Education of Taiwan has launched “5 year 50 billion New Taiwanese Dollars” since 2006. In 2014, eleven universities from Taiwan were ranked among the top 500 in QS World University Rankings, with National Taiwan University taking the 76th spot. Since Taiwan’s higher education standards are among the leading institutions in the world, it has become an important educational gateway in Asia.

WinnieEley joined the University of Newcastle in Australia as Pro Vice Chancellor (International and Advancement) in May 2013. Prior to the above appointment, Winnie was the founding director of international affairs at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) between 2008 and 2013.

She held a concurrent appointment as acting and inaugural director of advanced executive education at PolyU between 2011 and 2012. She has over ten years of senior management experience with appointed positions, including deputy country director, Director Abuja and Director Business Services of the British Council in Nigeria, and director of education services for the British Council in Hong Kong.

She has spent the last 15 years in devising international development strategy; developing whole-institution approach and associated systems and partnerships in international education; and leading and managing a range of diverse portfolios from scholarships, science, creative industries, alumni relations, transnational education, marketing and communications, to high level policy collaborations.


Presentation Abstract: Univer-city in Newcastle, Australia

The University of Newcastle [UoN] celebrates fifty years of autonomous status as a university this year. UoN is one of the many universities, which is established to serve local needs with the support from ‘public-spirited citizens’ in Australia in the 60s and 70s. As outlined in the chapter by Cushing, Quinn &McMillen (2014), UON has developed as an institution, which was founded to meet the significant regional educational needs into one which is internationally recognised for academic and research excellence which includes 15 subjects being ranked in the top 200 in the QS Subject Rankings 2015.

The role of the University in the regions in which it is located has been recast through its history and it has now evolved into the second largest employer in Newcastle and an institution which makes a significant contribution to regional economies wherever it is located through the graduation of skilled professionals and the attraction of talented students, researchers and professionals from across the world. As the University continues to grow in reputation of its equity, excellence and engagement, it is increasingly important to define the role of a University in institutional engagement with partners, the four spheres identified by Bjarnason and Coldstream (2003) will be used in framing the parameter of our thinking and activities, “engagement implies strenuous, thoughtful, argumentative interaction with the non-university world in at least four spheres: setting universities aims, purposes and priorities; relating teaching and learning to the wider world; the back-and-forth dialogue between researchers and practitioners; and taking on wider responsibilities as neighbours and citizens.” In addition, it is critically essential for UoN to be a socially responsible citizen in the community, which hosts it. This presentation tells the Newcastle story as a univer-city that is in the top 8 in the country in research grants.

Dr Atul Chauhan

Amity University


Dr Atul Chauhan is the President of the non-profit RitnandBalved Education Foundation and the Chancellor of Amity University. Dr Chauhan is also the CEO of the AKC Group of Companies which has worldwide interests in the fields of petrochemicals, healthcare and technology.

Amity is a leading private education group of India with over 120,000 students across 1,000 acres of high tech campuses and over 4,500 faculty members.  Amity University, the number 1 ranked private University of India has the highest ‘A’ Grade accreditation by NAAC and is highly research and innovation oriented, with the faculty having filed more patents than any other University in India.  Amity now also has campuses in London, Singapore, Dubai, South Africa, China, USA, Mauritius and Romania.

Dr Chauhan is a distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a member of the Expert Committee of University Grants Commission (UGC), a Statutory Body of Government of India.

Born and brought up in Germany, Dr Chauhan had his higher education in the field of engineering and finance from University College London and London School of Economics, after which he took on the responsibility of heading the London Office.

Apart from the worldwide engagements of the AKC Group of Companies, Dr Chauhan has been instrumental for building up the Amity Institutions right from the beginning.


Presentation Abstract: The Revolution in Higher Education in India — through private initiative

With the Indian Government forecasting a need of further 1,500 Universities, whilst it is already the Country with the largest numbers of higher education institutions in the World, it sets a landscape for much to be done. The presentation will start with an overview of the Higher Education scenario in India — how it developed, where it stands today and where it needs to go. It will be analysed how the private initiative has grown over the last ten years and what differentiation has been brought in. Using the case of Amity University, as one the first and leading not-for-profit private Universities of India, discussion will be carried forward about initiatives towards building a research and innovation driven University and how international branding is being done. Challenges and success stories with regards to internationalisation, research, quality and growth will also be gone into.

Brigadier General Professor Datuk Dr Kamarudin Hussin

Brigadier General Professor Datuk Dr Kamarudin Hussin will be forever remembered as the founding father of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). A multi-talented person, his managerial skill and student-oriented approach has made him one of the best CEOs of tertiary education in Malaysia. He still serves as the vice chancellor at UniMAP, being the most senior and the longest-serving vice chancellor in Malaysia to date. In March 2014, Professor Kamarudin was appointed as the new chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Rectors of the Malaysian Public Universities. In 2002, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia handed him the challenge to establish Universiti Malaysia Perlis.

Professor Kamarudin’s research works in extraction metallurgy engineering and mineral processing are visible in numerous scholarly high impact publications being indexed by Scopus and Web of Science. His contributions in administration, research and innovation has been recognized by many parties in the form of awards, the latest being that of  “The Name in Science” award by European Business Assembly (EBA); World Inventor Grand Order of Merit award from the organizers of the World Inventor Award Festival (WIAF) 2012 in Seoul, Korea; the Distinguished Fellow award, given by the Athlone Institute of Technology, Ireland; Best Manager of the Year from European Business Assembly (EBA) and the Champions of MINDS, awarded by the Malaysian Invention and Design Society. In addition, he has led various committees that look into numerous societal issues, for example, the issue of drug use amongst students in the ASEAN region. He was also appointed as the chairman for the state development committee looking into transforming Perlis towards a developed state.

Presentation Abstract: Malaysian Higher Education towards Global Prominence

Malaysia has emerged as top recruiters and destination of choice for international students. Malaysia is ranked 17th for the proportion of students who are international by U21 Ranking of National Higher Education Systems 2014. Currently, there are approximately 100,000 international students with 40% of them come from Asian countries including Kazakhstan. Malaysia aspires to ensure continuous improvement in providing excellent higher education systems for attracting both local and international students. The current capacity will be increased to host international students, by a target enrolment of 200,000 in 2020.

QS World Rankings by Subject has ranked Malaysian Universities in top 50, 100 and 200 for particular subjects of high interests. U21 also ranks Malaysia at 12th for resources input for higher education that includes expenditure for research and development as a percentage of GDP. Aforementioned facts prove higher education in Malaysia has progressed to a globally connected player recognised internationally for its academic and research excellence. Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), a young and dynamic public university was established in 2002 to fulfil Malaysia’s aspiration for enhancing technical education. The recently revived and launched Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) helped UniMAP to stand proud of its achievements and be recognised globally.

Prof. X.L. Ding is Chair Professor of Geomatics and Associate Dean of Faculty of Construction and Environment, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Prof. Ding obtained B.Eng. from Central South University, China in 1983, and Ph.D. from the University of Sydney, Australia in 1993. He lectured at Curtin University, Australia, between 1992 and 1996 and has been with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University since 1996. He was Head of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics from 2008 to 2014.

Prof. Ding’s research interests are in satellite positioning, remote sensing, geohazards, and smart cities. He has produced over 400 publications in these research fields and received many research awards. He was during 2003-2011 President of Sub-Commission 4.4 of International Association of Geodesy (IAG): Applications of Satellite & Airborne Imaging Systems. He was during 2000-2012 Chairman of Task Force 6.1.2 of International Federation of Surveyors (Fédération International des Géomètres) (FIG): Use of Satellite Interferometry in Deformation Measurements. Prof. Ding has been editor or member of editorial boards of various international journals.

He is Fellow of International Association of Geodesy (IAG), Fellow of Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Fellow of Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), and Fellow of Hong Kong Institution of Engineering Surveyors (HKIES).

Prof. Ding is also interested in developing international collaborations in education, research and technology transfer.


Presentation Abstract: Higher Education in Hong Kong: Achievements, Opportunities and Challenges

Higher education in Hong Kong has undergone significant reforms in recent years.  The reforms have provided a valuable opportunity to revitalize several aspects in efforts to keep Hong Kong’s graduates internationally competitive.  In addition, these changes have altered the landscape of Hong Kong’s higher education sector, and brought forth the importance of internationalization as a major driver to maintain its advantages as a world city.

Hong Kong’s encouraging rankings in recent international surveys have brought attention to the city’s higher education sector.  This talk will look into higher education reforms instigated, the opportunities they bring, the achievements that have been made thus far, and the challenges they present going forward.

Prof. Jay Ick Lim

Jay-Ick Lim is Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies, Ajou University, Korea, and University Professor of Business Administration.  Prior to becoming Dean on September 1, 2011, he served as Vice-President for planning and Vice-President for International Affairs, Ajou University.

He is an innovative and collaborative leader who has contributed to realize the campus internationalization.  Since he started his deanship, the number of international students and total budget of the school becomes more than doubled.

He also designed a special program to introduce Korean economic development, especially on industry and technology, to foreign countries.  He signed an agreement with Argentine government and started the BEC.AR program in 2013 and has successfully run the program so far.  The goal of the program is to train experts in administration of science and technology.  Dean Lim is also designing similar program with Ecuadorian, Vietnamese and Indonesian government.

Dean Lim received his B.A. from Seoul National University, and he started his career as a government officer at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Korea Government for four years.  Prior to joining Ajou University faculty, Dean Lim served as professor at the Cleveland State University and Rutgers University, USA, after he received his Ph.D. in Business administration from the University of Iowa, USA.


Presentation Abstract: The Internationalization of Korean Higher Education: Achievements, Challenges and Future Directions

In past decades, Korean universities have strived to internationalize education for many reasons: global university rankings, demand for graduates with global experiences, increased international competitors and government policies and etc.  For these reasons, many Korean universities have put much effort in: expansion of international partnerships, increase in outbound and inbound programs, international faculty members, international students and improvements of international infrastructure, more opportunity for international projects and etc.

In addition, Korean government has set up a ‘Study Korea 2020 projects’ for more international students to study in Korea.  Major initiatives of Korean government’s movement is to increase Korean government supported programs such as GKS(Global Korea Scholarship), use of overseas network, collaboration with overseas governments, promotion of Korean higher education, improving academic environment and infrastructure, promotion of Korean language and culture and improving the efficiency of administration and management and etc.

Through this presentation, I will introduce internationalization of Korean universities focused on recent achievements, challenges and future directions using case studies of a few Korean universities including Ajou University.
