Aims:
The overall aim of FOR21 is to drive the development of medical curriculum together with educational strategies, methods and tools for building communication competence and social responsibility, aimed to improve doctor-to-patient communication.
Specific objectives:
- To set up Communication Development training Centres (CDC) at Partner Universities, to support excellent practice and deliver Patient Centred Communication Skills Programme (PCCSP) locally.
- To create a PCCSP to be delivered in the clinical attachment years of medical students, to train them to communicate skillfully with patients by graduation and to reduce the negative impact on students practicing with patients before a safe level of competency is achieved.
- To develop an assessment system for improving students’ performance and enhancing introduced innovative approaches.
- To transit from lecture-based teaching to innovative learning activities, such as blended and collaborative learning, use of interactive simulations in a fully integrated training regime.
- To combine the centers of excellence as a network, to stimulate curricula of partner and non-partner medical HEIs, to modernize and innovate, in accord with the latest trends in communication competency development.
The Republic of Kazakhstan identified 4 target groups for this project:
senior medical students, teaching, administrative and technical staff. The planned activities and expected results fit well the needs of identified target groups.
Medical students will be trained in advanced communication skills that are subject of concern according to local needs. Specifically, this includes training in achieving adherence to treatment, resolving conflict situations, encouraging self-care and informing patients on their well-being. This will be done through structured approach using modern educational methods outlined in PCCSP based on the Communication Competence framework.
Teaching and technical staff will satisfy their needs in receiving the training on creating virtual patient scenarios for development of communicative competence and using student-centered educational interventions, such as flipped classroom, blended learning and other advanced technical tools. Their training will be provided by CDC, also charged with coordinating communication skills development programme.
Administrative staff will get unified system of monitoring communication skills development for medical students. At this, all necessary equipment, expertise and template educational materials will be provided by the project.
The country will certainly benefit from the established international network of institutions, proving grounds for further sustainable development of communicative competence. Kazakhstan PCUs taking part in the project will become centers of excellence for other medical education institutions and will actively disseminate their experience to other actors and enrich both its own curriculum and curriculum of other medical universities with new themes and educational approaches.
