Postdoctoral fellowship

Postdoctoral fellowship is a form of postgraduate education that involves a set of research activities carried out by a scientist who has obtained a PhD or an equivalent degree and defended their dissertation no more than 6 years prior to admission. These activities aim to address scientific and applied problems on a specialized topic.

The goal of the postdoctoral fellowship is to train highly qualified scientific personnel to ensure the formation and continuity of scientific schools/institutes at KazNMU.

The postdoctoral program includes the following activities:

  • Research work according to the individual work plan of the postdoctoral fellow
  • Intermediate and final certification

Education in the postdoctoral program at KazNMU

  • Duration of study: 3 years
  • Form of study: full-time

Requirements for candidates for the role of postdoctoral fellows:

  • Citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan or foreign citizens under the age of 40
  • Having a PhD degree or an equivalent degree

As a result of the postdoctoral training, scientific, pedagogical, and managerial personnel will be prepared, ready to receive the academic title of «Associate Professor».

Procedure for admission to postdoctoral studies

Admission to postdoctoral studies is carried out on a competitive basis based on the results of the work of a specially organized Commission on the order of the Chairman of the Board – Rector of KazNMU.

The competition is held in two stages:

  • Stage I: preliminary selection of applicants’ applications
  • Stage II: defense of the research plan and scientific activity at the Commission meeting

To participate in the competition, applicants must submit the following documents to the Science Department of KazNMU within the specified period:

  1. For citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan: Identity card / Passport of the citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
  2. For foreigners and stateless persons: Residence permit / Certificate of stateless person / Refugee certificate;
  3. For kandas: Kandas certificate issued by local executive bodies;
  4. Diploma awarding the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). If the degree was obtained abroad, it is necessary to provide a certificate of recognition of the degree in accordance with the Rules for the recognition of educational documents approved by the Order of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated June 12, 2023 No. 268;
  5. Certificate confirming the level of English proficiency:
    • IELTS Academic, threshold score – at least 5.5 points,
    • TOEFL ITP, threshold score – at least 460 points,
    • TOEFL IBT, threshold score – at least 46 points.

  8. Calendar plan of research activities and publications for the next three years (download link );
  9. Motivation letter (no more than 1000 words);
  10. List of scientific papers for the last 6 years;
  11. Document confirming employment (employment record book, employment contract, archival certificate, etc.);
  12. Information about the commission of a corruption offense;
  13. Certificate of presence or absence of information about the commission of a criminal offense.

Applications received after the deadline are not considered.
The results of the preliminary selection are an admission or non-admission to participate in the competition for postdoctoral studies.
Admission to postdoctoral studies is carried out by order of the Chairman of the Board – Rector of KazNMU in accordance with the planned number of places and based on the positive decision of the Commission on admission to postdoctoral studies.
